Ashes and Flames. Orthodoxy as Faith in Romania

ashes-flames

With this book Dan Sandu sets out on an endeavour to encompass the very essence of Orthodox spirituality in Romania. Beginning with a short sketch of the historical development of the Orthodox Church in the Carpathian basin during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the author focuses on one of the darkest chapters in recent history: the communist period in Romania, when ecclesiastical life was suppressed and churches were abandoned and destroyed. But after 1989/90 the same Orthodox Church, which suffered so much during its “40 years in the desert” under the communist regime, has risen, as Dan Sandu shows in a large panoramic presentation with many actual examples, like Phoenix from the ashes. Ashes and Flames. Orthodoxy as Faith in Romania is the first modern, comprising synopsis of the history and actual situation of Orthodoxy in Romania
